Join us to count birds for the Great Backyard Bird Count! Ned will lead this afternoon walk at Swan Lake Nature Study Area. Named after the overwintering tundra swans that call this lake home for part of the year, Swan Lake is a bird diversity hotspot in our area. The lake also hosts many species of ducks and other waterfowl in the winter, including canvasback, redheads, northern pintails, and American wigeons. The willows and cottonwood trees near the boardwalk are great habitat for sparrows, wrens, blackbirds, and the raptors that hunt them. AND the boardwalk is now open again, so you will enjoy getting a bit of a closer look at the birds on the water. 

About Ned:

Ned Bohman is the Outreach and Education Coordinator for Great Basin Bird Observatory and has been conducting bird surveys in Nevada since 2015. These include point count and area search surveys in all of Nevada’s major habitat types, as well as a few major restoration sites, including the McCarran Ranch, just outside of Reno. He also currently serves as the Secretary of the Nevada Bird Records Committee.
