Description:

As a follow-up to Don's Birds of Truckee Meadows presentation of Flycatchers, Don will be leading a flycatcher themed field trip at Porter Springs. Porter Springs is a remote mini-desert oasis, located about 30 miles northwest of Lovelock.  It can be an excellent birding location during migration including flycatchers. From Reno, the round-trip to Porter Springs is about 250 miles.  We follow I-80 to Lovelock, then turn north 12 miles on asphalt, followed by 18 miles of gravel road.  High clearance vehicle is not necessary but good tires are advised. There are toilet facilities at the site.  Bring water and snacks. Fuel and food are available at Lovelock as well. We will meet at I-80 Exit 83 (rest area) at 8;30 a.m.  (Takes about an hour and 15 minutes from Reno to the rest area.)  From there we can caravan to Porter Springs, arriving about 10 a.m or so.  Departure to return to Reno is flexible, depending on birding activity.

In addition to birding, there is a high likelihood of seeing burros around Porter Springs, perhaps a pronghorn or two, and maybe a gopher snake on the road.  Porter Springs is a good place to bring a folding chair for pleasant birding in the shade as well.

Note:   If there has been recent rain in the area, the trip is cancelled.  The road can be quite muddy after a rain.
