Pinyon Jay Community Science Program Orientation
03/31/2026 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM PT

Location

Sparks, NV

Summary

This introductory session will be led by Outreach Biologist Ned Bohman and will cover Pinyon Jay biology and the history of GBBO’s Community Science Initiative. The session includes a 30-minute presentation on conservation concerns and program background, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A and discussion.

Please visit the Pinyon Jay Community Science Hub and download the free Survey123 app prior to the presentation: https://pinyon-jay-community-science-gbbo.hub.arcgis.com/pages/surveys
A follow-up field session on April 11th will offer hands-on experience using Survey123, with opportunities to look for Pinyon Jays in the field, followed by a casual volunteer meetup. All are welcome—new and seasoned volunteers alike—to attend the field session, the meetup, or both. Details coming soon.

In 2021, GBBO launched the Pinyon Jay Community Science Initiative with Northern Nevada Bird Alliance as a key partner. Since then, volunteers have joined regular trainings and community science walks to help study this iconic species.
Pinyon Jay populations have dropped nearly 80% since 1970, and we still have much to learn about why. Their unique behavior makes data collection tricky, but volunteers like you can help fill these gaps. Join our community science effort and make a real impact on understanding and conserving Pinyon Jays!"
