Summary

Price: $25. The Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance is excited to host a special weekend of Nature Journaling workshops with John Muir Laws (aka Jack). Learn how to teach Nature Journaling! This Educator Workshop is limited to 30 people and open to school, after-school program, home-school, and volunteer instructors. From Jack's book, Opening the World Through Nature Journaling, "Nature journals are invaluable tools to uncover hidden secrets of nature and develop a questioning scientific mind." As educators, we continuously look for ways to engage students in learning and incorporating nature journaling in your lessons is a fun and engaging way to connect students with the natural world. Nature journals incorporate STEAM principles of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, using natural inquisitiveness and creativity to promote questioning, critical thinking, discussion and a desire to learn. In this workshop, Jack will provide you with methods, tools, and prompts to bring nature journaling into your programs. We will be using the Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance's bird taxidermy collection in the classroom space, and the nature trails at the Rosewood Nature Study Area for this workshop. We thank the Great Basin Institute and the City of Reno for allowing us to use this beautiful space for our workshop.
Recommended materials to bring: Sketchbook, favorite portable drawing tools, small ruler or measuring tape..

Please download Jack's free publication: Opening the World Through Nature Journaling: Integrating Art, Science & Language Arts, Second Edition from his website before this workshop. John Muir Laws is a principal leader and innovator of the worldwide nature journaling movement. He is a naturalist, artist, and educator who has dedicated his work to connecting people to nature through art and science. From an early age, his parents instilled in him a deep love and respect for nature. Over the years, that love has grown into a commitment to stewardship and a passion to share the delight of exploring nature with others.

The Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance (formerly Lahontan Audubon Society) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We are a chapter of the National Audubon Society and based in Reno, Nevada. We are dedicated to preserve and improve the remaining habitat of birds and other wildlife, restore historical habitat, and educate people, especially children, about birds in our unique Nevada environments. We thank the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts for providing grant funds that enable us to offer this special interactive workshop with John Muir Laws. All proceeds from this workshop will be used to support the artist and our birding community. All ticket sales are final. There will be no refunds unless a class is canceled.
